Check-in and drop-off 4
How early to get to BERArrival time advice Check your airline's check-in and boarding times; BER publishes no fixed minimum.
BER says allow plenty of time even with hand luggage only, and extra for passport control on non-Schengen flights. USA and Israel flights have a second gate check (opens 2 h, closes 30 min before departure).
Terminal 1 check-in and Fast Bag DropCheck-in and bag drop Departures Level E1, ten check-in islands (118 counters, two oversized-baggage counters). 99 self-service machines in the check-in hall, the pavilions and on Level U1 above the station.
Print a bag tag at a machine, then drop the bag at your airline's counter or at zones 511–516 (not British Airways, Delta, United, Qatar). Non-Schengen or connecting flights may be refused at machines. Your counter is shown in the BER app and on screens.
Terminal 2 check-in and Fast Bag DropCheck-in and bag drop T2 Level E0, right inside the entrance; 16 counters, one oversized-baggage counter and 28 self-service kiosks. Security is upstairs on Level E1.

Arrival: passport, bags, customs 12
Arriving at Terminal 1 from a Schengen countryArrival steps Arrival gates (Levels E0/E0Z) → baggage claim, Level E0 → exit into the arrivals hall, Level E0 (exits Arrival 1 and Arrival 2). Trains are below on Level U2; taxis, ride-hail and buses are outside on E0.
No passport check on Schengen flights, but carry your passport or ID; checks can be reintroduced at short notice.
Arriving at Terminal 1 from outside SchengenArrival steps Federal Police passport control (EES kiosks and EasyPASS gates before the desks) → baggage claim, Level E0 → customs (red exit if you have goods to declare) → arrivals hall, Level E0.
EU/EEA/Swiss citizens may have separate desks. Non-EU short-stay visitors register in EES, so expect longer queues. BER does not say which claim hall serves non-Schengen flights; check the monitors.
Arriving at Terminal 2Arrival steps Baggage claim on the ground floor (Level E0) → T2 arrivals area, Level E0 → walk a few minutes via the E0 walkway to T1 for the station (U2), taxis, ride-hail and buses.
T2 has no road access of its own, so all onward transport starts at T1. Bulky items come out behind belt C3.
Baggage claim halls and finding your beltBaggage claim T1: Level E0, halls with belts A1–A4 and B1–B4, before the exits to the arrivals hall. T2: ground floor (E0), belts numbered C (e.g. C3). Large items (buggies, sports gear): centre of the T1 claim area; behind belt C3 in T2.
Your belt is on the monitors in baggage claim and in the flight details on the BER website and app.
Baggage Tracing desks (T1 baggage claim)Lost / damaged baggage Level E0, inside baggage claim A1–A4 and inside baggage claim B1–B4
Report missing or damaged bags before you leave the claim hall; you get a WorldTracer reference. Your airline (or its handler) is responsible; BER lists airline contacts online.
Baggage Tracing desk (T1 arrivals hall)Lost / damaged baggage Arrivals Level E0, Arrival 1, between the escalators from E0 up to E1
For bag problems noticed after you've left baggage claim. Items lost elsewhere in the terminal go to the Lost Property Office on Level U1.
Baggage Tracing desk (T2)Lost / damaged baggage Inside T2 baggage claim, Level E0
Report missing or damaged bags here before exiting; your airline handles the claim and tracing.
Customs on arrival (red exit)Customs After baggage claim, before the arrivals hall. Use the red exit to declare goods and pay duty.
Declare goods over the allowance, commercial goods and restricted items. Meat and milk products face special rules. Cash over €10,000 from outside the EU must be declared in writing in the red area.
Duty-free allowances arriving from outside the EUDuty-free allowance Applies at the customs exit after baggage claim
Duty is charged on the full value of any single item that pushes you over the limit. Different allowances apply when arriving from another EU country.
Where greeters waitMeeting point T1 arrivals hall, Level E0 (below the check-in hall), exits Arrival 1 and Arrival 2; follow signs "Terminal 1-2, Ankunft / Arrivals". T2 arrivals are on T2 Level E0, a few minutes' walk via the E0 walkway.
BER names no specific meeting point; agree on Arrival 1 or 2. The airport information desk is between the two exits. Public cafés and the E4 observation deck help pass the wait.

BER describes this self-transfer (VIABER) process; it does not cover through-checked bags, so ask your airline whether your bags are tagged to the final destination. Passport control applies whenever Schengen and non-Schengen meet.
Connecting with hand luggage only (arriving at T1)Airside transfer Stay inside the security area and follow the signs to your next gate; Schengen gates A/B on Level E1, non-Schengen gates C/D on Level E2.
